Does drinking hot water have health benefit?

Water is an essential thing for hydration and the normal functioning of our body. Although we usually drink cold water during the day, drinking warm or hot water can bring us additional benefits in addition to hydration.

According to ancient Eastern medicine, drinking a glass of hot water in the morning helps kick-start the digestive system and metabolism. Adding a piece of lemon in the mug will cause even more health benefits.

But, be careful not to drink too much hot water. The temperature of above 120 degrees Fahrenheit can damage the epithelial cells in your mouth and throat. If you want to do something good for your health tomorrow, start the morning with a cup of warm or hot water. Here are some benefits you can get.

According to a study published in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, drinking hot water—as opposed to cold water—could help improve swallowing in people with achalasia (difficulty swallowing because the lower esophageal sphincter [LES] doesn’t relax).

The authors say “Cold water could increase LES resting pressure, prolong the contraction duration of esophageal body, and exacerbate achalasia symptoms. Hot water could reduce LES resting pressure, assist LES relaxation, shorten the contraction duration of esophageal body, and relieve symptoms. Thus achalasia patients are recommended to eat hot and warm food and avoid cold food.”
