Music and mood are closely associated. Your mood can be affected differently by different musical genres. Certain circumstances can have an impact on our mood, making us feel extremely pleased, content, or even a little grouchy and sad. In this article, we'll help you start each morning in a good mood and explain how music and music genres affect mood.

What does medicine say?

Remember hearing that one good song and getting the chills? Blood flow to the parts of the brain that produce and regulate emotions is increased when you listen to music. When we hear music, the limbic system, which is involved in processing emotions and managing memory, "lights up.“

Dopamine, a neurotransmitter that causes feelings of joy and well-being, could be the cause of the goosebumps you experience when you hear a particularly moving piece of music. Your body may start to release dopamine after just the first few notes of a song. Numerous cases of people who had brain damage and lost their capacity to recognize melodies, but still could recognize the emotions that music evokes have been reported by science.

We all have bad days sometimes and things just don't go our way. Have you ever made music when you were having a bad day? Making music has a good impact on mood-influencing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.

Focus, concentration, memory, sleep, mood, and motivation are all influenced by dopamine. Serotonin has a similar effect on mood, sleep habits, anxiety, and pain. Singing, playing an instrument, or making music electronically are all examples of active music-making.

Create a playlist for the perfect morning

We all have our favorite songs that always get us in the mood. If you also have songs that are guaranteed to affect your mood, create a morning playlist. The following advice will help you put up a playlist that will make you feel more awake, focused, and aware.

Think about the lyrics: Although dynamic, upbeat songs are always an excellent choice for a morning playlist, it's also crucial to take the lyrics into account. Look for music with inspiring themes and positive messages. Avoid sad love songs in the morning!

Music has a positive effect on your morning workout

Some people make sure to listen to music during their morning workout. While exercising, music can make you move more quickly and serve as a pain relief. Additionally, music might impact how quickly you work out. Your brain syncs up with the music's beat. Over time, choose tracks with a faster tempo to help you push yourself to the next level.

Effects of Music Genres on Emotions

According to a 2012 article titled "Listening to Classical, pop, and Metal Music: An Investigation of Mood," various musical genres can have various effects on people's moods. This was demonstrated by Christopher Rea, Pamelyn MacDonald, and Gwen Carnes.

You can choose music that will aid you and support you while you are recovering if you are aware of the emotions that various musical genres might elicit. The fact is that different genres affect our emotions. Sad ballads make us cry, pop and disco songs make us happy and want to dance, and rock and metal music makes us feel energetic.

Here's some research on the topic of different genres, but keep in mind that beyond this, it all depends on your personal preferences:

  • Classical: Classical music has the power to promote feelings of serenity, clarity, or tranquility. With a sonata, you can improve your memory, take pleasure in some quiet time, and sleep better.
  • Heavy Metal: The music boosts fans' confidence and may even elicit happy emotions. Metal fans feel energetic and confident while listening to that genre. On the other side, some people experience negative feelings and anxiety while listening to metal songs.
  • Rock: Rock music has the power to boost moods and productivity. Listening to rock songs is an excellent way to increase your heart rate before a workout.
  • Pop: Pop music tends to induce positive emotions and relaxation while reducing stress and confusion.
  • Country: Country songs are drawn from the sincerity and hopes of actual people. Listening to country music might amplify negative thoughts and cause feelings of despair. This is perhaps because of sorrowful stories or messages. On the other side, there are extremely happy country songs that bring people together and make them dance.

Music is good for mental health

Music controls our emotions. For instance, sorrowful music encourages the listener to shift their attention away from upsetting circumstances (such as breakups, deaths, etc.) and onto the artfulness of the song. Hard or heavy music is worse at controlling unpleasant emotions than quiet, calming music, like classical music. In stressful circumstances, listening to upbeat music might affect how you perceive the world. For instance, listening to cheerful music can improve your mood.

Think about it, for birthdays and weddings we listen to happy music, when it's Christmas we listen to festive music that awakens beautiful feelings in us. On the other hand, when people are depressed, they tend to listen to sad songs or aggressive metal genre songs. Either way, music is always there for us when we are happy or when we are feeling lonely.

Music Therapy

According to the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), music therapy programs can be created to meet objectives like stress management, memory improvement, and pain relief. According to a review published in The LancetTrusted Source in 2015, patients who listened to music before, during, or after surgery had less pain and anxiety than those who did not.

Music therapists are clinical specialists with training who utilize music to achieve social, emotional, cognitive, and physical objectives. When it comes to helping patients who struggle with verbal communication, music therapy is a very successful clinical intervention. Working with music therapists can be a life-changing experience for persons who have been injured, ill, or have a disability. Children with autism can improve their communication, social, and emotional skills.
